Digital Citizenship
What Is Digital Citizenship?
Digital citizenship refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the Internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level.
This is why digital citizenship is such a crucial topic to teach today’s learners about positive use of technology by all digital users.
As the rate of technological advancement continues to increase, the world as a whole is becoming more dependent on the Internet for day-to-day activities.
That can mean checking a bank account, purchasing a product, or simply keeping in touch with a friend.
As a result, there’s a major difference between good digital citizenship and bad digital citizenship.
Good digital citizenship engages young students and shows them how to connect with one another, empathize with each other, and create lasting relationships through digital tools.
Bad digital citizenship, on the other hand, entails cyberbullying, irresponsible social media usage, and a general lack of knowledge about how to safely use the Internet.
I
understood digital citizenship as positive use of technology by all digital
users which reinforces positive aspect of technology so that everyone can work
in digital work. It is also a responsible, critical, and competent use of
technology where every user needs to show proper behavior with digital tools
when interacting with others online and it is also sharing right information to
right users, provide correct/authentic information and create awareness through
digital platform. Further digital citizenship has 9 elements such as digital
access, digital commerce, digital communication, digital literacy, digital
etiquette, digital law, digital rights and responsibilities, digital health and
wellness and digital security.
As a digital citizen of the country I find a
bigger role of being responsible to model a good behavior and direct learner
towards right direction. It is because as an educator it’s our full
responsibility to shape our learners to use technology effectively for better
learning. As we know technology allows teachers to upgrade their knowledge and
offer up to date information to our students with no need to stop working. It
is also our job to encourage our students to be active learners and foster in
them the thirst for discovery and knowledge. In this new era of world educator
should act as a quality and quantity filter for the huge amount of information
available on the internet.
As a digital teacher or user it is our right as well as responsibility to use appropriate language and gestures when communicating and interacting with other users online. In a way we should view, respect, and value ideas and opinions of your fellow person. The recent trend that I have seen is no credential to the source work that we use but it is as crucial and appropriate to cite and acknowledge others work as we refer and use it for any purpose. Some of the key digital rights are right to access and use computers/content, right to create and share digital media, right to express our ideas and opinions freely and more importantly we have right to report anyone or anything that seems inappropriate. In a community we can model the appropriate use of technology such as internet safety, use of right information from online and accompany with the technology rules. Moreover we can teach or advocate our community people about copyright laws and cyber bullying which is happening now and then through online that we as a user should be careful of what we post and share in order to avoid ourselves being the victim of cyber bullying.
- Protect private information
- Browse safe and appropriate behaviors
- respect others
- acknowledge others work
- fairly treat everyone online i.e., "NO" to cyberbullying
- timely use of technology
